Ringed
Gidgee Gidgee: A
non-commercial medium sized tree (5-7 m) found growing in small groups
in semi-desert areas. Tree often has a twisted shape and milled lengths
are rarely available, but short lengths are cut for crafts. The figured
wood (some called 'ringed' gidgee) if found in rare trees (maybe 1
in 10,000) is highly sought after for the best small crafts. The wood
is very dense and hard and a dark chocolate brown with a thin contrasting
cream-yellow sapwood .
Red
Ironwood Red Ironwood grows
in the northern tropical areas of Australia as tall 20m leguminous
tree with bright green leaves. The leaves and other parts of the tree
are poisonous. The red heart wood is very dense, very hard and used
for items where strength and durability are required. It is rarely
cut an found commercially nowadays.
Yellow
Box Yellow Box (Eucalyptus melliodora)
grows as a medium to large 25-40m spreading tree in southern woodlands
of Australia. It produces copious quantities of nectar it its honey-scented
flowers (hence species name, melli = honey and
odora = odor). It's strong and very durable yellow wood is sometimes
cut for fencepost's and firewood. It has an interlocked grain like
most Australian boxes. When figured and available as burls, it is
highly prized and desired for crafts and smaller items.
Black
Gidgee Black Gidgee (or Belyando Blackwood)
is a tree of 10-13m with a thick rough bark and a poor form so is
rarely cut for it's wood. It grows in a small region in central Queensland
near the Belyando River and its dark heart wood makes it suitable
for smaller craft items. Little is known of the wood or the tree as
they are rarely used.
This rare 7 million year old Podocarp. is now extinct! It was
identified, by wood experts in Australia from its microscopic characteristics
of the wood, as an ancient podocarp (Cupressinoxylon sp.). Podocarps
are still represented in many genera in the southern hemisphere.
It was dated from the gravels & sediments in Gippsland Victoria
where it was found. Although black, from minerals and long periods
of burial, it is still woody and workable, not stone.
